City walking tour

City-Tour We would like to invite you to discover the historic Andernach during our 3.5 km long city walking tour. Just stroll along the Rhine and experience the Rhenish hospitality in the Old City. 1 „Läufkreuz“
Originally the „Läufkreuz“. Was the Crucifix of the Burial Ground for wretched souls from the municipal
hospital which was dissolved in 1841.

2 Christ church
Protestant town church – formerly church of the franciscan monastery.
Gothic church (decorated style) with one nave.
Preferred by the rhenish aristocray as a place of burial.

City-museum
Built as town residence of the town clerk George von der Leyen in 1580/90. Today the town’s museum.

4 Hospitalkirche
Catholic house of god of the St.Nikolaus secular hospital. Former church of the annuntiation cloister. Constructed in the late baroque period (1737-1739). Bohemian severy vault. Among other things the foundation of the order by Jane of Valois is shown in the extensive painting.

Ruine of the castle5 Ruine of the castle
The construction of the city castle of the cologne-electoral lords began around 1200. Blown up by French in 1689.

Coblence gate
The coblence gate, „ castle port“ was built around 1200, destroyed in parts 1689.

7 Bulwark
The bulwark was erected on an earthern boom between 1659 to 1661, serving as a Rhine-toll bastion of the cologne-electoral lords.

8 Rhine gate
The part facing the city was built around 1200. In the inner court you will find the two so-called “Bäckerjungen” (bakerboys) larger than life, made of tuff-stone.

9 Old crane
The old crane, built 1554 to 1561, replaced a floating crane; the loading machine was until 1911 in full operation and mainly used for loading millstones.
Round Tower
10 Round tower
The round tower with its height of 56 m (184ft) withstood the French attempt to blow it up;
built from 1440 to 1453.

Catholic Curch
The catholic parish church was built about 1200, as a basilica in bound style.

Helmwarts-tower
This tower is placed nearby „Dadenbergturm“ (tower) and was restored in 1994.

Historic town hall
The old town hall was built between 1561-1574. Below the present day council room ist the acient, medieval Jewish bath, called Mikwe.
