Round Tower

From any direction and from far to see, is the landmark of our city, the round tower.

With its height of 56 meters up to the spire, it belongs to the highest medieval military towers of Germany.

The town councilor had this imposing building established between 1440 and 1453 as a symbol for civil self-confidence. The extremely solid execution with walls of four meters width kept a bitter disappointment for the French soldiers of the sun king Ludwig XIV. in the Palatinate succession war of  1689, because it withstood without any difficulty the French attempt to blow it up.
