St. Mary’s cathedral

Assumption Catholic parish church (Maria Himmelfahrt) When in 1198 the pre-roman church was completely destroyed with the exception of the bell tower during a military conflict, the archbishop of Trier, Johann, who held the patronage right in Andernach, took the opportunity to have an imposing new building established in the territory of the archbishop of Cologne.
With its four towers the gallery basilica with three naves dominates the townscape together with the neighboring round tower. The richness of the different ornaments and the rhythmic wall construction both of the apse and of the west facade make it one of the most beautiful roman churches on the Middle Rhine.
The rich painting on the inside is as much impressive as the various furnishings from different centuries.
