The city castle of the archbishops of Cologne

In 1167, the emperor Friedrich Barbarossa gave the city of Andernach including the lucrative Rhine tariff to Rainald von Dassel, the archbishop of Cologne, as a reward for war services in Italy.
In order to keep the disorderly people of Andernach under control, Rainald von Dassel and his successors built a city castle at a strategic place. This city castle was surrounded and protected by a water jump and was able to defend the neighboring Koblenz gate and the close Rhine tariff.
Several times in the 14th century the castle was attacked and destroyed by rebel guilds and afterwards rebuilt. Only in the wars of the 17th century, parts of the castle were destroyed.
Upon request, it is possible to take marriage vows in the electorate keep in the midst of this dreamlike scenery.
