Redoubt

In order to continue to raise the Rhine tariff from the passing ships after the demolition of the medieval tariff tower, a bastion was built from 1659 to 1661 at the behest of the Elector Maximilian Heinrich. The bastion was provided with a fortified pointed-angular nose to the Rhine and a barrel-vaulted passage.
Armored with cannons, the bastion guarded the navigation on the Rhine. Today, it harbors a memorial for the victims of the two world wars renewed in 1970/71.
