Rhine gate

This old gate, which in former times was called grain gate, forms even today the passage from the Rhine banks into the city.
The Rhine gate built in the 1200s as one of the two preserved double gates shows the "modern" medieval defense strategy. Converted several times in the course of the centuries, it only remained preserved by a new rebuilding measure in 1820, when the northern city wall was put down.
As the street level was raised, a higher archway had to be broken off the inner gate, the front part was completely taken down and rebuild according to plans dating from the 17th century.

At the inner gate, roman warriors from Tuffstein are still on guard duty. These warriors are commonly and affectionately called "the Andernach baker boys", according to the legend written down in the 19th century.
