Street Carnival in Andernach
Carnival, as it is celebrated today particularly in the Rhineland, goes back to the time of the 1800s. The organization, the names, clothes, songs and sayings go back to the customs in this period.
In 1823 the Cologne citizenry founded a new tradition of the Rhineland carnival with a magnificent course on Shrove Monday. A Prince Carnival was appointed, cap meetings and carnival speeches (the so-called “Buett speeches”) were held (the speakers stand in a “Buett”, i.e. a barrel). carnival
The Andernach Carnival follows the tradition of the Rhineland, but particularly the customs of  Baden and of the Alemannic Carnival, where the winter is to be driven out with creepy masks and spring is to be welcomed.

During the " fifth season ", how the time of carnival is also called, all “carnival fools” celebrate carnival. They sing carnival songs and dance to the typical carnival music. Typical carnival pastries are the "Berlins",  "Carps" and "Maunzen". The typical drinks are a Koelsch (bear from Cologne) or a Pils of the barrel. carnival
This is how the Rhinelander enjoy the last days before Lent with its chastity bids and obligations.
After having “carried to grave the carnival in a mourning course on the Rhine” at midnight, genuine carnival revelers terminate the fifth season with the traditional fish meal on Ash Wednesday.
For believing Christians the six weeks of Lent start this day with receiving a small ash cross on the forehead from the priest. This is to be a symbol for our transitoriness and the readiness for Lent.
