Famous visitors
The ancient Romans recognized the beauty of the landscape and laid the foundation stone for the town of Andernach, on one of the most picturesque places on the Rhine more than 2000 years ago. Within eleven days only, Gaius Julius Caesar had a bridge built over the Rhine near Andernach. The French commander Napoleon also visited the town during an inspection tour.
Since then, Andernach has been the host of many great celebrities. Among them was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who rested at Andernach, at lunchtime’ when he was on his way to Maria Laach with his carriage. Victor Hugo, who came to Andernach in 1840, mentioned in a letter to a friend: „Andernach is a most wonderful town. There is no stone that would not be a keepsake, no turning of the landscape that would not be a beauty. Here is nature, history and poetry.“ Andernach’s more recent history is also very complex: Andernach is called the „Cradle of the Bundeswehr“, the German Army, since the first federal chancellor Konrad Adenauer solemnly welcomed the first group of 1.500 volunteer soldiers in 1956.
Rosemarie Nitribitt, the „rake woman” of the country of the economic miracle, whose life and murder never cleared up, became the most discussed affair in the post-war period, lived in Andernach for a while.
