City museum

City MuseumThe Andernach city museum was inaugurated in 1936 as a "local history museum" in the House von der Leyen, built at the end of the 16th century and represents one of the most beautiful houses of the city. The former city palace of the senior civil servant Georg von der Leyen, is an outstanding witness  for the complex architecture in the late Renaissance period. Especially the portico is very impressive with its various quotations of Greek and Roman building tradition.

Today, the city museum primarily shows topics of the history of Andernach city and the surrounding countryside in form of special exhibitions. A permanent exhibition in the ground level shows the Roman history of Andernach and its harbor, which is known to be the turntable of the stone trade. Furthermore, you will find the early Christian gravestones of the 7th century, discovered on excavations in Andernach.
