Andernach Geyser
History of the Geyser
The first rising gas bubbles were discovered in the dead arm of the Rhine at the “Namedyer Werth” peninsular at the beginning of the 20th century. During an initial drilling around 1903/1904 to exploit the carbon dioxide / water reserves, the geyser ‘jumped’ around 40m in the air. Alongside the commercial use of the carbon dioxide reserves by the Namedyer Sprudel GmbH, this unique natural spectacle was also developed and marketed as a tourist attraction as early as 1912. There were gastronomic establishments at the side of the geyser and riding festivals took place regularly.
Heavily damaged during the first and second World Wars, the geyser finally shut down in 1957 following additional technical problems.
